Visually, however, there's no doubt that Red Steel is one of the best-looking titles to launch with Nintendo's new system. The title came under fire a bit during E3 that it wasn't up to snuff, but it's gotten a polish since then. While we were told in Leipzig that it had gotten another facelift, we didn't really see it as much as we do now. The graphics look very polished, and while it's not exactly Resistance: Fall of Man (but then, what Wii game will come close to PS3 visuals?), it's still a rather aesthetically pleasing game that captures the dark ambience that one would expect from the subject matter. The environmental lighting looks sharp, and the characters have come along nicely from what we saw at E3.

If anything, though, the biggest problem we've got with Red Steel at this point is that more than most Wii titles, it's been tough to get above a surface scratch on how the mechanics come together. It's got promise for sure, and the dual swordplay and gun fighting still seems very cool. If anything, we're hoping that as the game gets nearer to completion, we'll get a chance to hop over to Ubisoft and spend more face time with it so that we can make a more proper judgment on how the ultimate product should turn out. As it is now, the game looks exceptionally polished, and we definitely like the shooting gallery feel of it, minus the clunky periphery and slow turning. It's still a work in progress, but we're anxious to play it for more than five to ten minutes at a time so that we can really get an in-depth feel for it. Once we do, we'll let you know.

hat mich noch nicht so überzeugt.

schaut mir zu simpel aus, muss aber zugeben, dass ich bis jetzt nur den neuesten trailer gesehen habe.

außerdem benötigt zelda 100% meiner konsolenaufmerksamkeit.

As before, once the scene is set, you find yourself escorting your fiancée's father through various sections of an office building. To begin with, you're taken through the basics of swordplay, and this side of things hasn't changed since last month's play test--in other words, the hacking and slashing techniques are tied closely to your actions with the Wiimote, but they don't correspond exactly.

After you've mastered the various techniques and have successfully slashed, dodged, and parried a number of times, you're given the choice of sparing the life of your sword-wielding adversary, or sending him to his grave. Choosing the former will give you honour points, which you can build up through the game, although it wasn't clear from this play test just what those points will get you.

[...]Our play test lasted for about an hour in all, and it gave us the opportunity to get a feel for how the Wii controller fits in to the game. One thing that's for sure is that the coordination required won't necessarily come easy, especially when you're combining looking and moving with zooming in, shooting, crouching, and reloading--all simultaneously using both hands with several kinds of motion.

That said, we certainly found that we paid more attention to what was going on than we would have had we been playing the game with a normal control pad, and the result was an absorbing experience that left us wanting to play more. We managed to build up a sweat while playing, and with not much longer to go now, we'll have a full preview of the game in the near future.
