It looks like this monitor was engineered like many LCD TVs are. The aggressive gamma curve is common among vendors eager to make the display appear to have more contrast ratio, but only turns dark areas into an inky black mess. In other areas, this display performed all right. It's eye-blindingly bright with the default brightness set to its maximum, cranking out 531 cd/m². The dark levels were a little too bright for our liking at .59 cd/m², averaged over 9 measuring points. This gave the display an average contrast ratio of 825:1. If you crank the brightness all the way down, the dark levels improve to a nice .18 cd/m², with full-white output of about 146 cd/m². Either way, the contrast ratio hovers around that 800:1 ViewSonic claimed on the spec sheet. Bright uniformity is average for a PC monitor at 85%, and dark uniformity is about 84%, a little bit better than average.

[...]In all, it seems like the affordable VX2835wm falls more into the "you get what you pay for" camp than the "what an incredible bargain" camp. It is somewhat challenged ergonomically with view adjustment other than tilt, a poorly placed HDMI input, and no accoutrements like USB hubs, side inputs, or card readers. Functionally, the color gamut isn't as wide as we'd like and the gamma curve is off. We've seen worse monitors, but we've seen plenty of better ones, too. If you just have to have something larger than 24-inch and you can't spend several hundred dollars more, you won't be totally disappointed with the VX2835wm. If you really care about quality, you're better off spending more (or at least settling for a same-priced 24-inch display).
