weiß jemand ob der linux kernel von esxi garbage collection/trim unterstützt?

Wenn du mir sagst, welche Version des Linux-Kernels ESXi ausliefert, kann ich dir das (Modulo etwaiger herstellerspezifischer Backports) beantworten.

iirc ist der DSM/TRIM-Support seitens hdparm komplett im Userspace, und sollte auf halbwegs modernen Kernels eigentlich immer funktionieren. Zur Not wuerde ich das Programm einfach aus den Sourcen kompilieren, und mir eine aktuelle Version davon installieren. Damit sind jede Menge Dateisysteme offline (unmounted) und einige auch online TRIM-bar.
