Nachdem Intel ja schon Erfolge mit der 90 nm-Technologie aufzuweisen hat, zieht jetzt auch AMD nach und geht mit United Microelectronics (UMC) eine Partnerschaft ein. Im Vordergrund stehen die Entwicklung und Einführung neuer Herstellungsmethoden, allen voran die Fertigung in 90 nm als auch in 65 nm und SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator).
Die Produktion von AMD's Barton (130 nm) soll Ende dieses Jahres beginnen, ab 2005 soll bereits 65 nm-Technologie verwendet werden. So soll UMC unter anderem auch AMD's x86-64 CPUs produzieren; vermutlich ab Ende 2003.
