das spiel schaut nicht aus wie ein typisches ue3 spiel weil es eine stark modifizierte ue2 nutzt, die techniken der aktuellen ue verwendet.

Interview mit Ken Levine

Part One
Part Two

Will there be multiplayer or online gaming in BioShock?
There will be no multiplayer (hold on before you complain!!!!) but for a very specific reason. BioShock features a compelling storyline that revolves around the experiences of one man as he enters the decaying world of Rapture. Having a multiplayer component would have compromised the story we were trying to tell so we made the decision to keep this game as a single player experience. There will be an online component, however, where new content can be downloaded.

Are there any lessons from Deus Ex 2 that the team has learned and is using when making BioShock?
Many development teams have learned important lessons from previous attempts to bring PC games to the console, though Deus Ex 2 is an infamous example. One of the main things we are doing differently is that we are leading our development efforts with the 360. Therefore all decisions on HUD and gameplay situations that are made on the 360 will be re-thought and optimized when brought over onto the PC.

Zitat
As for the "Matrix" touch, well, he wants to add flavor that most game designers neglect. "Most video game people have read one book and seen one movie in their life, which is 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Aliens' or variations of that. There's great things in that, but you need some variety." He's drawing from elsewhere. "Look, I just steal from other sources," he freely admitted.

Levine describes himself as "half total freaking computer video game nerd and half pretentious, boring, Vassar-educated twit." He's read up on Ayn Rand and studied art history. Certainly that can fit into a video game. "You could take a bunch of liberal-arts courses and find 'The Matrix' all throughout it. What they did is they basically said, 'Let's take a tiny bit of this and sprinkle it on top of our action movie. Because it makes our action movie seem cooler.' That's what 'BioShock' is. The architecture ... [and] the Ayn Rand philosophy and the economic theory sprinkled on top. My challenge as a writer is to make this a nice flavor, but never forget this is a first-person shooter. Never."

Given that Ken Levine has stated on many occasions he wishes BioShock to be a graphically impressive game, will the PC version ship with any DX10 support and or enhacements, such as support for Geometry Shaders or Physics?
We’re very interested in DirectX10 and have been talking to some potential partners about it. That’s all we can say at this moment.

Will there be cut scenes, and what other forms of storytelling will you use?
We’ll be going into this in more detail with you guys and the media sites soon but it is not a heavy cut scene type of game.

Will there be ghostlike appearances or flashbacks in the game, ala The Shining?
As much as we love The Shining, we can’t comment on this right now. How’s that for vague?

Ken Levine, co-founder of Irrational Games and lead designer of BioShock, joins us to discuss his latest venture. Other things covered in the interview include Ken’s feelings on some anticipated 2007 titles, the potential for a new Thief game (and whether he even likes stealth games to begin with), his feelings on a hypothetical System Shock 3, the deal with Irrational’s Australian studio and how it affects BioShock, his personal design philosophies, what sets BioShock apart from the FPS flock, and much more!

Join us for an hour long chat with one of the industry’s most unique game designers.

Neues BioShock Video (Hunt for Big Daddy)

Dauer: ca. 6:30 Min.

Besonders beachtenswert: Neue Plasmids (Teleport, Telekinese, Aggressor) und die Liebe zum Detail. :)

Dazu noch die Info, dass BioShock ein wenig verspätet ist. Neuer Release-Termin: 21. August (Europa: 24. August).
