i mein natürlich den onboard IDE... btw, wie weis i das allgemein (nicht boardspezifisch)... selbe frage gilt bei mir auch fürs ASUS VX97.... wo find i solche infos? asus schreibts beim bios-update nimma dazu...

Es gibt keine wirklichen Limits.

1. Falls das BIOS ein altes Award 4.51 ist, dann hängt es sich möglicherweise auf, wenn die Platte größer als 32 GB ist (wegen eines BIOS Bugs). Das kann man mit Software umgehen. Falls man von der Platte nicht booten will, dann trägt man sie einfach nicht im BIOS ein, Win2k oder Linux funktioniert trotzdem.

2. Falls die Platte größer als 137 GB ist, braucht man 48-Bit-Treiber, um die volle Kapazität zu nutzen. Gibts für Linux und soweit ich weiß auch für Win2k und XP.

is a 4.51PG - dh wenn i zb a 60GB einbau, nicht von der boote, Bios auf NONE und linux kennt trotzdem die platte (als volle 60GB)?

primary-master is hda1-... (je nach partitions)....
hdb is dann primary slave oder secondary master? in welcher reihenfolge nummeriert er die durch?

Ja, geht. Mit dem IDE-Patch von Andre Hedrik (scheinbar included in 2.4.19 und schon länger in der -ac Serie) funktioniert endlich auch das Einschalten von UDMA einwandfrei ohne BIOS-Support. Hab jetzt 28 MB/s Durchsatz auf einer alten P2-266 Kiste mit UDMA33 am PIIX4 (Southbridge vom BX Chipset).
